As the first long distance oil product pipeline in china, the construction of Ge-La pipeline from Germu in Qinghai province to Lasha city in Tebiet Autonomous Region initialed in 1973. The pipeline construction was basically completed in Oct.1977 with a total length of 1080km and an annual transportation capacity of 25 ×104 tons.

The construction of Ge-La oil product pipeline was organized by the Chief logistics Department of PLA, which passes through rivers ( such as Chumahe, the source of Yangtze river, Tuotuohe, Tongtianhe etc.)at 108 places and crosses over 9 mountains such as Kunlun and Tanggula under the engineering of the oil pipeline regiment in Qingcang station of the Chief Logistics Department. There are more than 900km pipeline through the bitter cold area at an elevation more than 4000m(with the highest elevation over 5200m). Moreover, 560km pipeline is laid in the permafrost area with a thickness ranging from several to hundred meters. Harsh geology such as icicle, ice dune,thick underground aquifer and thermal melt slough was encountered very often, adding a lot of difficulties for the construction. It was the first time in China to apply the sequential transmission technology applied in Ge-La pipeline to deliver gasoline, diesel, aviation kerosene and kerosene in 5 grades sequentially. It serves for fuel stations along Qing-Cang road and Lasha both for military and civil use.

The operation of La-Ge pipeline is not only beneficial to frontier defense, but also vital to Tibet ,the worlds’ ridge, to create prosperous economy. It can be said, economic life will change essentially wherever the oil flows. It helps to establish a special position of “ Oil Economy” for Tibet.

There are some long distance pipeline of oil product transportation, including pipeline from Fusun to Yingkou’s Bayuquan, which was completed in 1995 with a length of 246km, pipeline from Tianjin Binhai International Airport to Beijing Capital International Airport, which was completed in 1999 with a length 185km and a 1200 km long pipeline from Lanzhou to Chengdu and Chongqing, which is under construction after construction commenced on Oct.22,2000.
