Sichuan Oilfield lies in Sichuan basin in the eastern Sichuan province, covering an area of about 23×104 km2（with an available exploration area 18×104 km2）.

Sichuan is a place where natural gas was extracted through well digging and utilized most early worldwide, with a history of 60 years for natural gas development. As of 1997, there were 91 gas fields had been discovered totally, including Moxi, Shengdengshan and so on as well as 13 oilfields discovered such as Lianchi, Guihua etc., with an accumulative proven OGIP of 5`99.66×108m3 and proven OOIP of 6796×104t. Four gas production areas have been established in the southern, west-southern, west-northern and eastern basin. In 1997, the gas production in Sichuan field reached 75×108m3, accounting approximately for half of the total gas production in China. It is the earliest and first large gas field in China.
